- Has your child been officially diagnosed with a condition like depression, anxiety or ADHD?
- Is your child in overall good health? Does your child have other health conditions that need to be treated first?
- Have you tried other forms of treatment, such as behaviour therapy or individual counseling?
- What symptoms would medication help, and would that significantly improve your child’s life?
- Is your child on other medications that could potentially interfere with new meds?
- Are you willing to have your child try different dosages or medications until the doctor finds one that works?
- Will you be able to monitor your child’s medication?
- Do you know the possible side effects of medication? Are you OK with them?
- Are you willing to stick to treatment and not let your child take “medication vacations”?
- Some medications can take months to start working fully. How long are you willing to try a medication to see if it will work?
There are many factors and feelings to consider before you decide whether to go with medication for your child. It’s a very personal choice. Before you decide on medication for your child, ask yourself these questions.
